Stomatognatic system consists of muscles of head and neck, masticatory muscles, teeth, lips and salivatory glands. Approximately, the % 40 percent of the body is made up of the skeletal muscles. The muscles of the face are also in this group. The muscles which provide the active movements of the mandible are four pairs and these are; masseter, temporal, medial pterygoid and lateral pterygoid muscles. There are two ways to evaluate the motor functions of the muscles. These are first; you want the patient to stand out against to the force, which you apply to the muscle and the second, you want the patient to move against the force you apply. The most effective method to evaluate the muscle is electromyography. This method provides you to record the differences in the action potentials of the muscle, by applying electrodes on the body of the muscles.
